We are experiencing an epidemic of loneliness, according to Dr. Vivek Murthy, former U.S. Surgeon General’s report on Loneliness and Isolation. The report found that “lacking social connection is comparable to smoking 15 cigarettes per day.” The report also found that about half of US adults report feeling lonely, with the highest rates among young adults. Loneliness is detrimental leading to stress, stroke, heart disease, depression, early mortality.
Loneliness also affects how we show up every day—at home, we feel disconnected from loved ones; at work, it weakens team dynamics and organizational culture; and in our communities, many of us feel unseen, even in a crowd.
